Beacons Dominate Cougars in Season Opener

Boston, MA (Feb. 25, 2025) --- The UMass Boston Beacons overcame a slow start to defeat the Clark University Cougars 12-7 in their season opener on Saturday.  


How it Happened 

After falling behind 2-0 early and trailing 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Beacons got their offense firing to start the second. Patrick Carey scored his second of the game to level the score at four and from there the Beacons never looked back, taking control of the game and scoring the next three unanswered. 

Three different players notched hat tricks in their 2025 season debut. Patrick Carey, Jack Schartner, and Timothy Sullivan all achieved the feat, showcasing their offensive firepower. In addition, Seth Libby provided key support with two assists. 

The UMass Boston defense was stingy throughout the game, limiting the Cougars to just three goals over the final three quarters. The Beacons' defense also played an instrumental role in the victory, causing 17 turnovers and scooping up 49 ground balls. 

James Boldy was stellar in net, making 14 saves to secure the win for UMass Boston. 


Inside the Box Score 

  • Graduate student, Patrick Carey scored the first goal of the 2025 season giving him 17 career goals. Carey also led the team in groundballs with 9. 

  • Six different Beacons were credited with two caused turnovers in the game. 

  • The Cougars and Beacons were even in shots taken with 47. 

  • The Beacons were perfect on the penalty kill 0-3. 

  • The Cougars won the face off battle 16-7.
