Danbury, CT (Oct. 18, 2025) — Despite leading in nearly every statistical category, the UMass Boston volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday, falling to Western Connecticut State, 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 27-29, 16-18).
The Beacons outperformed the Wolves across the board—tallying more total points (83-72), kills (64-55), blocks (14-12), assists (57-52), and digs (100-95)—but couldn't close it out in a tightly contested fifth set.
After dropping the opening set 25-22, UMass Boston responded emphatically, limiting the Wolves to their lowest hitting percentage of the match in a dominant 25-14 second set win. The Beacons carried that momentum into the third, earning a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 set advantage.
Set four was a battle that went to extra points, with WestConn narrowly edging the Beacons, 29-27. UMass Boston jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the decisive fifth set, sparked by strong serving from Audrey Cofield. The Beacons held a 13-8 advantage, but a six-point run from the Wolves gave the hosts their first lead at 14-13. UMass Boston briefly regained the edge at 15-14 after a Paige Coulson kill and a WestConn error, but the Wolves finished the set on a 4-1 run to complete the comeback.
Errors proved costly in the fifth set, where the Beacons committed 10 errors to the Wolves' 4. Overall, WestConn finished with 33 errors compared to 28 for UMass Boston.
