BOSTON, MA (January 7, 2025) – The UMass Boston women's basketball team enters Wednesday's Little East Conference matchup against the University of Southern Maine coming off a record-high 95 points under Head Coach Heather Jacob's tenure against the Fitchburg State Falcons as the Beacons seek their fifth win of the season on the road in Gorham, ME, at 5:30 p.m.
Previously:
- The Beacons and the Huskies have played 84 times over a 40-year span. The Beacons have only taken 11 victories against Southern Maine in that span. The Beacons' most recent win over the Huskies came in 2022 when UMass Boston outscored the Huskies 69-58 in Gorham. In January of 2023, The Beacons came just short in a 54-58 nail-biter against the Huskies in the most recent matchup. In the last 10 contests, the Beacons are an even 5-5, and average 50 points per game.
This Season:
- This season as a unit, the Beacons (4-8, 1-2 LEC) are averaging 58.4 points per contest led by sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.) with just under 10 points (9.9) per game and leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game. Sophomore rookie Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) started the year off by providing an offensive spark off the bench but has recently started three of her last four games since flourishing in her role. The Beacons are averaging 11.7 assists per game, headed by junior captain Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) with 2.8 dishes per game as the primary playmaker. Junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) has made a name for herself on the defensive end, cementing herself as one of the premiere perimeter defenders in the LEC. In 12 games played, Fevry averages 8.2 points per game and 2.5 steals (30 in 12 games). Her average and total steals per game make Fevry second in the LEC.
- The Huskies (5-7, 1-2 LEC) average 55.5 points per game (33.3% FG, 32.5% 3PT, 60.2% FT) led by first-year guard Lucy Wiles with 10.3 per game. In 12 games played, junior forward Vanessa Vaughan leads the effort on the glass with 4.4 per game out of the team's 36.4 per game. Of the 11.3 assists per night, the Huskies' lead playmaker is Vaughan with 2.3 assists per contest.
