BOSTON, MA ( January 14, 2025) – The Beacons' women's basketball team hosted the Little East Conference undefeated (RV) UMass Dartmouth Corsairs on Tuesday afternoon from the Clark Gymnasium, as UMass Boston made the Corsairs earn their money in Boston, but ultimately fell short against the LEC's top team.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 46 – 69 UMass Dartmouth
UMass Boston: 5-10 (2-3 LEC)
UMass Dartmouth: 11-2 (4-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
- The Beacons finished quarter one down by just a point, led by a hot start from sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.), junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.), and first-year Tajeiha Madison (Brockton, Mass.), as they entered Q2 down 20-21.
- Facing an 11-point deficit from the halftime break, the Beacons continued to test the Corsairs, keeping pace in the third quarter. UMass Dartmouth was only able to outscore the Beacons by four in the third, thanks to first-year Ashleigh Lagor (Millbury, Mass.) and Samora Merchant (Brookfield, Conn.) with multiple finishes off the jumper, and in the paint to keep the Beacons' comeback hopes alive. The Beacons scored 12 points and held the Corsairs to just 16 in Q3.
- The Corsairs relit the flame from their second-quarter run and ultimately pulled away with the lead, but not without a hard-fought effort from the Beacons.
By the Box:
- Berrios led all UMass Boston scorers with 13 points on 6-11 shooting figures. Berrios was also tied for a team-high seven rebounds, to couple with one block and one steal for another all-around performance for Berrios.
- Madison recorded a career-high 11 points on 4-6 shooting, including 1-1 from downtown. Madison was also a menace on the defensive end, with a career-high five of the Beacons' 11 total steals.
- Lagor shot an efficient 4-7 from the field for eight points, three boards, and one assist.
- Ferry and Merchant were hybrid playmakers on the floor tonight, leading UMass Boston with three assists each.
- Sophomore forward Mia Molinari (Millis, Mass.) saw a season-high 17 minutes and made a difference with a team-high seven rebounds in her time on the floor.
Who's Next:
- The Beacons continue LEC regular season play on Thursday, January 16, from Plymouth, NH, as UMass Boston takes on the Plymouth State Panthers on the road at 5:00 p.m.
