Boston, MA (Sep. 20, 2024) --- The UMass Boston volleyball team continues their season on the road at Smith College in Northampton, MA Saturday.
The Basics
The Beacons
The Beacons most recently played at Dean College in Franklin, Mass this past Wednesday where they picked up the three set win. This was the fourth, 3 straight set victory for the Beacons this season.
Paige Coulson is leading the team in points with 104.5 and is just behind Dylan Wertzberger in PTS/S with 2.75. Wertzberger leads the team in efficiency with 3.40 PTS/S. After a monster game at the service line, Toni Guerra jumps to 21 service aces on the season. Defensively, Mary Matthews and Wertzberger are matched averaging 3.90 Digs/Set. Mikayla Cleary, Addie Blomgren, and Coulson are all in double digits for blocks on the season.
The Pioneers
The Pioneers have only dropped one game this season and that happened during the Bonnie May Invitational vs Gallaudet University 3 sets to 2. Smith College started their season steamrolling opponents dropping just one set in their first game of the season. From there they went on a 21-set winning streak through eight games. After dropping the first game of the tournament the Pioneers went on to beat Middlebury College and #18 Wesleyan University 3-2. They finished off the tournament with a 3-1 win over Bates.
The Pioneers have four different players averaging more than 3 points per set with Abby Hunt taking the top spot with 3.72 PTS/S. Taylor Gwynne has been electric for Smith College with 36 service aces averaging nearly one every set. On the defensive end Claudia Poehlmann has collected 27 blocks.
Series History
UMass Boston and Smith College haven't played since 2008 and have only played three times in their history. Each of the three games have gone the way of Smith College.
