BOSTON, MA (September 18, 2024) – The Beacons' women's soccer team returned to the James Cotter Field to score three goals in the first half against the Curry College Colonels to protect home turf following a five-game road stint.
The Basics
UMass Boston 3 – 2 Curry College
UMass Boston: 4-1-2
Curry College: 3-2-1
How it Happened
- The Beacons' first-year forward Sophia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) started the game with a bang, dribbling down the left wing and sending in a left-footed shot across the net that served too much for the Colonels' senior goalkeeper Hannah Correa, as Schallmo gifted the Beacons an early 1-0 lead.
- Mere moments following the opening goal, Schallmo took her speed back down the wing, this time sending in a low cross to find fellow first-year forward Daniella Celotto (Prospect, Conn.), as her first touch rifled a shot past Correa to double the early lead in just six minutes
- The third and final Beacons' goal, once again, was initiated by Schallmo following a Curry turnover deep in the Colonels' half. Schallmo sent a right-footed cross to find a cutting Kathyrn Brown (Somers, Conn.) for the Beacons' third goal of the half.
- The Colonels were able to find their footing as the second half unfolded. The Colonels leading goal scorer Mia Schena struck twin in the 51st minute unassisted, and again with just under ten minutes remaining from Kiera Lindmark, assisted by Jovi Goldstein.
- In the final fifteen minutes of the game, as the Beacons held just a one-goal advantage, the Beacons' junior goalkeeper Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) registered crucial saves, stretching out against three sure-fire equalizers, to keep the Beacons on top for the fourth win this season.
By The Numbers
- Curry finished out with a 17 to five-shot advantage over UMass Boston (12-5 on target). Schallmo led the way for all Beacons with three shots, including one goal and two assists.
- Brown scores her third goal of the season, a new season high for all UMass Boston goal-scorers.
- Schallmo gets her third assist and first goal of the season, bringing her total points to five early in the year.
- UMass Boston held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks over the Colonels, attributing to the offensive playmaking from the Beacons.
- Cote played all 90 minutes and registered a career-high in saves with 10, thwarting nearly every effort produced by the Colonels. Her season totals increases to 26 saves with a .867% save percentage.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Zomback provided her thoughts on the squad's progression and development seven games into the season. She said,
- "Going into conference play [this upcoming weekend], we felt good coming into this game to build towards [preparing for] that. Trying to get experience and minutes for our young players, I thought, was very important… I think it will continue to get better and better. They are still trying to find their chemistry. We have essentially six new players between the forwards and midfielders… Come October, hopefully we are getting to click. As of right now, our big focus is getting ready and preparing for conference play against Plymouth [State]."
Who's Next
- The Beacons' women's soccer team will open Little East Conference competition this Saturday, September 21 against the Plymouth State Panthers, from the Panther Field in Plymouth, New Hampshire at 1:00 p.m.
