NEW YORK CITY, N.Y (August 31, 2024) – The Beacons Volleyball Team goes 2-0 on Day two at the New York University (NYU) Tournament on Saturday, August 31, from New York City, following their second win of the day over Drew University in four sets.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 3 vs Drew University 1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-11, 25-17)
UMass Boston: 2-1
Drew University: 1-1
How It Happened:
The Beacons were far more efficient on the offensive end, as they tallied 50 kills compared to the Rangers' 35. The Beacons served up a total of 13 aces compared to the Rangers' 5. On the defensive side, the Beacons recorded five blocks as a team and 86 digs. The Beacons outplayed the Rangers in nearly every statistical category.
The first set went back and forth until Beacons sophomore
Paige Coulson (Marriottsville, Md.) recorded her fourth kill of the game, bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of the Beacs. From there, UMass Boston kept the offense flowing to coast to a 25-16 victory in set one.
Set two saw the Beacs jump out to an early 10-5 lead. However, the Rangers leveled the scoring at 20 points apiece. The Rangers would steal set two from the Beacons following back-to-back points to end set two 26-24.
The final two sets played similarly to the first. The Beacons and Rangers go back-and-forth until UMass Boston hits the 10-point mark, and from there, Coach Cheney's offense takes care of the rest. UMass Boston finished out the final two sets in dominant offensive showings, closing out set three 25-11, and set four 25-17.

Junior
Lauren Westlund (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team offensively with 16, followed by Coulson with 12, and senior
Jade Hernandez (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) with 7. Junior
Ruby Ackerman (Arcadia Calif.) led the Beacons in service aces with four, followed by Coulson and first-year
Audrey Cofield (Ypsilanti, Mich.) with 3. Hernandez was also a problem for the Rangers from the defensive end, with two solo blocks and a block assist. Junior
Amelia Devlin (West Chester, PA.) served as the primary playmaker for the Beacons with 22 assists, followed by Cofield, who also contributed 16 assists. First-year
Mary Matthews was active on the defensive end, leading the Beacons with a team-high in digs with 20.
