New England College (6-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons first ever win got off to an ideal start in the first quarter. Free position shots on consecutive possessions put the visitors out in front 2-0 with
Mia Boyd and
Kristen Briggs cashing in. The offensive attack was interrupted only momentarily by the Pilgrims before
Angelina Mazzone and
Jamie McAleavey pushed the UMass Boston lead to 4-1.
The second period saw the Beacons' lead grow thanks to the work of
Mia Boyd and
Teresa Sheedy. The duo went back-to-back twice during the frame to take a commanding 8-3 advantage into the halftime break.
A pair of New England College scores to open the third cut the Beacons' lead to 8-5. McAleavey, though, was quick with the response, ripping the net for her 15th goal of the year. In the three minutes that followed McAleavey's score, UMass Boston followers were treated to a sight that is more familiar on the ice.
Liz Kramp and
Margeaux Butters scored back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to six, 11-5.
The Pilgrims threatened late, pulling within three to close out the third quarter. The fourth, however, belonged to Falandys. She kept New England College from their ninth goal past the three minute mark. By that time, the scoreboard was fully in the Beacons' control.
When asked about the historic accomplishment postgame, UMass Boston Head Coach
Hannah Khin said ??"So excited to get the first win in program history, it was a complete offensive and defensive effort. The entire team played really well together. We had zero cards and fouls all game which is a huge positive because we never were put into a deficit. It's very rewarding to see these women get their first win of the season, especially heading into the end of the season, so they can end it on a positive high note."Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Boyd's fourth hat trick of the year gives her a team-high 25 points on the season
