NEWTON, Mass. – The UMass Boston women's lacrosse team honored their two seniors, Kenzie DeMeo and Brianna Damske on Saturday morning from the campus of UMass Amherst, Mount Ida, as the Beacons wrapped up their inaugural women's lacrosse season. Bridgewater State University would prevail on senior night by a score of 16-4. With the loss, the Beacons end their inaugural season with a record of 1-12, while the Bears end their regular season with a record of 7-10 (3-3 MASCAC)
UMass Boston controlled the offensive zone for the opening minutes despite the three early goals from the Bears. Sophomore Emily Pearl would put the first goal and her 17th of the year on the board for the Beacons. Sophomore Teresa Sheedy would follow suit two minutes later finding twine for the 13th time this season and make it a one goal game at 3-2. The Bears would close out the opening quarter with two more goals to regain that three-goal lead.
The Beacons would find the back of the net twice in the second quarter. Junior attacker, Liz Kramp, would get things going to the Beacons in the third minute of the second quarter with a free-position goal making the score 5-3. Gonsalves would split up the Beacons goals with two of her, giving Bridgewater State a 7-3 lead. Sheedy would strike once again with four seconds remaining on a free position shot and bring UMass Boston within three entering the half.
Coming out of the half it was all Bridgewater State. They would the Beacons scoreless in the second half and add nine more goals to their tally.
Sophomore Jamie McAleavy and DeMeo would each lead the team in both ground balls and caused turnovers with three apiece.
Sophomore goalie Leah Bosch would face her season-high of 25 shots in today's contest and save nine of those 25 shots.
With the UMass Boston women's lacrosse inaugural season coming to a close, the Beacons have a lot to be proud off.
Here is a list of their accomplishments:
Sophomore midfielder Mia Boyd was the leading goal scorer for the Beacons with 23 goals. Additionally, she tallied 15 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls. Furthermore, Boyd led the team in free-position goals with 10.
McAleavy was third on the team in scoring with 16 goals. She led the team in assists with sox, ground balls with 33, draw controls with 50, and caused turnovers with 27. Additionally, McAleavy would tally six free-position goals, putting her second on the team.
Pearl finished second on the team in scoring with 17 goals and assists with three. Additionally, she would tally .736 shots on goal percentage.
Sheedy finished tied fourth in goals with 14 on the year. She would tie the team record for assists with six and third in caused turnovers with 16.
Mazzone finished her year tied for fourth in goals with 14 on the year. She would finish second among her teammates in ground balls with 24 and caused turnovers with 17.
Sophomore defender Emily Hansen would finish third on the team in groundballs with 22.
Freshman goalie Lauren Falandys would lead the team in saves with 90 and would start 11 out of the 12 games played this season.
