SALEM, Mass. – The UMass Boston women's lacrosse team was upended by Salem State University Saturday evening by a score of 9-8 at Alumni Field. With the loss, the Beacons fall to 0-8 on the season, while Salem State improved to 2-6.
The Beacons got on the board early and often, scoring three goals in a span of two minutes. Sophomore Mia Boyd was responsible for two of the three early goals for UMass Boston. The Vikings would close out the first 15 minutes with two goals of their own to cut the Beacons' lead to one.
Just 3:27 into the second quarter, the Vikings would tie the game up with a goal from Hollingsworth. Sophomore Angelina Mazzone, junior Margeaux Butters, and sophomore Teresa Sheedy would find the back of the net to give the Beacons a three-goal lead once again. The Vikings would slot one more to close out the half and cut the Beacons to two.
Five minutes into the second half, Currey would pot on for the Vikings to cut the lead once again to one. The other loan goal of the third quarter was Mazzone's second of the night on a women-up opportunity to regain a two-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was all Vikings. Mazzone would secure the hat trick at the 10:11 mark in the fourth quarter to make the score 8-6. The Vikings would not go away. Laura Young would score two unanswered goals, one of which evened the tide at eight a piece. Bennett would call game for Salem State with a solo shot to bring the score final to 9-8.
Sophomore Jamie McAleavey led the team with six caused turnovers and ground balls respectively and added two points to her tally with a goal and an assist. Freshman Laura Falandys and sophomore Leah Bosch would combine for 11 saves on 20 total shots.
The Beacons are back in action on Wednesday, April 3 as they travel to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State. First Draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
