NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 15, 2024). – The UMass Boston softball team increased their current win streak on the season to five following an 8-0 victory against the Warriors of Lycoming College from the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as they prepare for their final matchup of their 2024 Spring Break trip later today against the Devils of Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham.
Senior pitcher
Bri Melchionda once again had herself a big game on the mound for the Beacons, as she pitched all five of five innings in the victory. Melchionda saw 19 batters, struck out five, and walked one as she only allowed three hits to keep the Warriors scoreless, and to improve her record on the mound this year to an undefeated 3-0. Melchionda, along with Graduate Haley Tillberry, and senior
Lauryn Bethea each tallied two hits in three plate appearances, with Bethea and Melchionda coming around each to score two runs, and Tilberry recording two triples. Melchionda also held the team-high in RBIs on the day with two. Melchionda and first-year
Ella Delisle each recorded a double in the victory. The Beacons recorded their eight runs off nine hits and three errors by the Warriors.
The first run of the day for the Beacons came in the top of the second inning following Bethea's run off an error by the Warriors' second basewomen. Melchionda was able to come across unscathed to score following Beacons' sophomore
Lauren Miner's hit into a fielder's choice that would see Delisle out at second. Melchionda's run increased the Beacons' lead to two before retaking the field for the bottom of the second. Melchionda struck out the first two batters in the top of the second before making the final play at the mound to end the inning.
UMass followed up the second inning with a six-hit rally in the top of the third that would increase their lead by six runs to lead by eight by the end of the inning. The first two batters lined and flied out to left field, and center field respectively. Tilberry got the rally going on two outs with a missile to deep right-center for her first triple of the evening. Bethea would single up the middle to advance first-year
Hayley Krockta, and score Tilberry to make it 3-0 UMass Boston. First-year
Mya Perron then singled up the middle to score Krockta, and advance Bethea to second to add another run to the lead and make it 5-0 in favor of UMass Boston. Melchionda would keep the rally going with a double to left-center to score both Perron and Bethea, making the now 6-0 lead even stronger. The Warriors would fail to catch a break as Delisle went back-to-back with doubles to score Melchionda following her double to make it 7-0 Beacons. The final run of the game would come in the top of the third inning from an RBI single by junior
Amauri English up the middle that would score Delisle from second base.
The Warriors earned a single walk in the third inning but failed to generate any momentum from the batter's box, as they left one on base with zero hits in their direct response to the Beacons' third-inning rally.
The Beacons would only record one more hit to close out the game before holding the Warriors to zero runs through five innings to earn the victory off the NCAA softball run rule, stating that if a team is up by more than eight runs after five innings, the team leading will win the game.
The Beacons improve to 7-1 on the year, as they take the field one final time later today from North Myrtle Beach against the Devils of FDU-Florham at 5:00pm. Stay tuned for live stats, live video, and recap at
