Softball Goes the Distance Against Mount Aloysius: Go 2-0 on Day 3 From Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 13, 2024)— The Beacons' softball team won their second game on the day in extra innings against the Mounties of Mount Aloysius College in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon from the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

Graduate pitcher Jacqueline Cherry picked up her second win of the trip from the mound for the Beacs, as she faced 33 batters while only allowing six hits on eight strikeouts, and zero walks as she once again shined in the middle for UMass Boston. The Beacons recorded three crucial hits in the win, with sophomore Kyleigh Gray, first-year Mya Perron, and graduate Haley Tilberry each played a pivotal role in the win. The Beacons came away with the victory off two runs off three hits and two lethal errors by the Mounties of Mount Aloysius.

The matchup today saw a dual of the defenses once again, as the Beacons opened the top of the first inning with a one-two-three stop to take the plate. The Beacons' bats were similarly slow to start off in the bottom of the first.

The first hit of the game eventually came in the top of the third, as Cherry gave up her first and only one of six hits in the game to the Mounties. Cherry only gave up a single to the left side of the field before taking down the next two batters to leave the first and only runner on base in the inning.

The Beacs had the same luck at the flip of the inning, as the first hit of the game came from Gray, who singled to the right side of the field, but was left on second to end the inning.
Mount Aloysius caught fire in the top of the fourth inning, as they registered four hits, however couldn't translate the hits to runs as they re-took the field following another scoreless inning. The Beacons picked up a stop off a foul ball at the plate, a runner's violation, and Cherry picked up a looking strikeout to extinguish the fire.

The next hit for the Beacons was Perron's single in the bottom of the seventh inning, as she singled to right field, and stole second with two outs, however was left on base as the Beacons took back the field as they headed into extra innings.

The Mounties recorded the first run of the game in the top of the eighth following an RBI single to right to take the lead with two outs. Cherry was able to halt the run with a looking strikeout to end the inning as the Beacons took to the plate with a chance to win in the bottom of the eighth. Score or go home.

Sophomore Lauren Miner was able to tie the game with one out, off of an error by the Mounties' pitcher. However UMass was unable to take the winning run in the inning, as they headed back to the field for a ninth inning.

The Beacons defense held strong in the ninth, led by Cherry at the mound as the were able to go three and out, determined to get back to the plate.
With sophomore Sophie Richland placed on second to start the inning due to the extra innings protocols, the Beacs were able to walk it off from a sacrifice bunt by Tilberry, which caused Richland to advance to third, and then score following an error by the Mount Aloysius pitcher to ice the victory for their fourth straight victory from North Myrtle Beach.

Up next for the Beacons' softball team from Myrtle Beach, the prepare for battle against the Warriors Lycoming College on Friday at 1:00pm, followed by the Devils of Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham at 5:00 pm.
