Women's Lacrosse Makes History on Wednesday Night

Newton, Mass. - The UMass Boston Women's Lacrosse Team played their first game in program history on Wednesday night on the campus of Mount Ida College, falling to future Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State University by a final score of 20-7.

UMass Boston (0-1)
Eastern Connecticut State University (1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
With every single player making their collegiate lacrosse debut on Wednesday, the Beacons took some time to find their footing on the turf. They fell into a 5-0 hole before Mia Boyd sliced her way through the Eastern Connecticut defense to score an unassisted goal, the first in program history.

The Warriors tacked on three more score in the first quarter to take an 8-1 lead into the first intermission.

It took all of 15 seconds in the second quarter for UMass Boston's Jamie McAleavey to capitalize on an Eastern Connecticut penalty. The first goal of McAleavey's career cut the deficit to 8-2.

Though the Warriors stretched the lead back to seven, the Beacons once again called on Boyd to get them on the board. Boyd's eight-meter attempt found the back of the net, cutting the score to 9-3 with under 10 minutes to play.

Eastern Connecticut scored once more before halftime, but the strong goalkeeping presence of freshman Laura Falandys kept the second period scoring even at two goals apiece.

The Warriors scored two quick goals to open the second half, but the Beacons had two quick goals to respond. Teresa Sheedy made good on an unassisted score for her first career goal before Mia Boyd secured a hat trick in her lacrosse debut to cut the score to 12-5.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Warriors, but the Beacons saw two more first career goals from the sticks of Emily Pearl and Hannah Rich.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Falandys saved 14 shots, playing all 60 minutes in goal
