BOSTON, MA (November 18, 2024) – The UMass Boston men's basketball team will travel to the Fitchburg State Recreation Center for a non-conference matchup against the Falcons on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Beacons look to keep the ball rolling after their home-opening win in overtime against the Colby-Sawyer Chargers.
Previously:
- UMass Boston took the first matchup against Fitchburg State in the 80s with a 121-91 victory from then, Boston State College. Since then, the Beacons are 22-12 against the Falcons, with the most recent matchup in 2015 resulting in a five-point 88-83 victory for UMass Boston from the Clark Athletic Center. On the road, the Beacons are 9-6 and cumulatively average 80.62 points per game (PPG). The last ten matchups from 2006-2015, the two teams are even at 5-5.
This Season:
- The Beacons are 1-1 to start the season, with a loss against Salve Regina (61-65) and an overtime win in the Fourth Annual Black Collegiate Head Coaches Classic on Friday, November 15, against the Colby- Sawyer Chargers (87-82). First-year forward Cameron Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) is lighting up the field with 23.5 PPG, a team-high for the Beacons. Perkins leads all rookies in the LEC and is third in the conference in PPG averages. Fifth-year forward Mark Barrett (Brookline, Mass.) is fourth in the LEC in rebounds per game with 8 RPG. Senior guard and captain Emanuel "Manny" Zayas (Hollywood, Fla.) remains the primary playmaker with four assists per game in the first two matchups. Zayas is just behind Perkins in offensive production, averaging 19.5 PPG. Sophomore guard Xavier McKenzie (Lowell, Mass.) averages 13 PPG, and leads the way defensively with 2.5 steals per game. Defensively, the Beacons average 40 RPG and 11.5 "stocks" (blocks+steals/ 9.5 SPG, 2.5 blocks per game), and offensively average 74 points off 11.5 APG, and shoot 42.3% from the field and 37.2% beyond-the-arc.
- The Falcons are 0-4 to start the season, and as a team, average 66.5 PPG, 38.8 RPG, 9.3 APG, 8.5 SPG, 4.3 blocks per game, and 37.5% from the field and 24.7% beyond-the-arc. The Falcons don a trio of 10+ PPG scorers. Sophomore guard Matthew Drayton, Jalen Jackson, and Nathaniel Semedo cumulatively score 40.3 PPG, with Drayton leading the charge on 14.0 PPG.
