Women’s Basketball Falls in Season Opener

BOSTON, MA (November 13, 2024) – The UMass Boston women's basketball team fall to the Brandeis Judges 50-37 from the Clark Gymnasium in the 2024-25 season opener. Despite the result, the new look Beacons fared well against the Judges.

The Basics:

UMass Boston 37 – 50 Brandeis
UMass Boston: 0-1
Brandeis: 1-1

How It Happened:
  • The Beacons came away with the opening tip but the Judges opened scoring on a 12-4 run. Junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) scored the first points of the season for UMass Boston with a signature driving layup to open the scoring.
  • In the second quarter, The Beacons dug into the early deficit by getting to the charity stripe, knocking down free throws, and forcing their will in the paint. Entering halftime, the Beacons cut the gap to seven, following a pair of good free throws from junior guard Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.).
  • Following the halftime break, the Beacons fell into foul trouble in the third period, and the Judges had their way at the free throw line. The Judges shot 11 free throws in the third quarter, as UMass Boston continued to find success in the paint. The Beacons struggled to space the floor, and the Judges elevated their lead to 12 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Beacons closed out their home opener on a pair of good free throws from Fevry in the final moments to conclude the season opener from the Beacons' home court.

By the Numbers:
  • Jensen added her first career double-double in the effort, registering a team-high 12 points on 4-9 shooting, while pulling down 11 rebounds. Fevry was just behind her with nine points and a game-high five steals out of the Beacons total eight rips. Sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.), and first-year forward Ashleigh Lagor (Millbury, Mass.) scored their first career points as Beacons, with Berrios tallying six, and Lagor adding three. Lagor especially showed promise as a future star wing, with impressive offensive finesse from the post. Berrios was a force in the paint and in transition.

Who's Next:
  • Up next, the Beacons will travel to Milton, Massachusetts, for a non-conference tip-off against the Curry College Colonels at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16. For live stats and video coverage, stay tuned at UMass Boston - Official Athletics Website.
