Women’s Soccer Sinks Rhode Island College

BOSTON, MA (October 5, 2024) – The UMass Boston women's soccer team notches their fifth W in their last six games following another stellar team performance against Little East Conference opponents, the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College from the Beacons' home field in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Basics:
UMass Boston 2 – 1 RIC
UMass Boston 8-1-3 (3-0 LEC)
RIC 6-5-1 (1-2-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The Beacons opened scoring in the 12th minute. First-year forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) settled a clearance into her control in the Anchorwomen's midfield. She took two touches into space and let a long shot rip from just over 25 yards out to find the side netting for the opening goal of the contest, sending the Beacons' faithful into an uproar from the James Cotter Field.
  • The Anchorwomen would find an equalizer in the 27th minute following midfielder Karol Matamoros' through the ball down the right wing to find first-year winger Hannah Rezendez on the run. Rezendez took one touch to send a cross in, finding the cutter senior forward Taylor Salome all alone for the one-touch finish.
  • The final Beacons' goal came just before the first-half expiration, with under a minute left. First-year forward Kathyrn Brown (Somers, Conn.) received possession on the right wing. Brown battled multiple defenders as she lowered her shoulder and powered into the box. Her centering pass found a wide-open Schallmo to make it 2-1, for the final score of the day.
By the Numbers:
  • Schallmo, the new LEC leading goal scorer, notches her ninth and tenth goals of the season on four shots (three on target), as she was once again the primary option for the Beacons.
  • Brown, the lone playmaker in the afternoon, notches her first assist of the season, bringing her season points total to nine for the true freshman.
  • Junior netminder Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) took care of business between the pipes, adding a single save against two shots on target (11 total). Her record now stands at a still-undefeated 6-0-2, with 40 saves against 93 shots this season.
  • The Beacons have won their last five consecutive games and are unbeaten through their previous six. Schallmo now leads the conference in goals (10), assists (6), and points (26).
Who's Next:
  • Up next for the UMass Boston women's soccer team will be the University of New England, as the Beacs travel north to Biddeford, Maine, on Wednesday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m.
