Schallmo’s Hat Trick Pushes the Beacons Over the Corsairs

BOSTON, MA (October 2, 2024) – The UMass Boston women's Soccer team improves to 2-0 in the Little East Conference following their 3-0 win over conference rivals the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs from underneath the James Cotter Field lights on Wednesday evening.
The Basics
UMass Boston 3 - 0 UMass Dartmouth
UMass Boston 7-1-3 (2-0 LEC)
UMass Dartmouth 3-5-2 (0-2 LEC)
How it Happened
  • The Corsairs and the Beacons opened up a scoreless first half with heavy offensive pressure from the Beacons, as UMass Boston tallied 10 shots in the first half to UMass Dartmouth's one.
  • First-year forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) netted the contest's opening goal 60 minutes into the game from a free-kick spot deep in the left wing. Her curling shot took one hop past the Corsairs' first-year keeper, Emma Juelis, for the first-year's sixth goal of the season.
  • With ten minutes remaining, and the Beacons holding onto just a one-goal lead, first-year forward Devan Booth (Manchester, N.H) received a through pass into space. Booth took one touch to split the defense and found a cutting Schallmo all by her lonesome as she took two touches into space and punched in the second goal of the game into the bottom right corner.
  • Her third and final goal of the evening came with just six minutes remaining in the half. Schallmo received possession deep in the Corsairs' midfield on the left wing. She cut inside with two defenders on her left shoulder, took a big step into a shot from 35 yards out, and shocked Juelis for Schallmo's first career collegiate hat-trick.
By the Numbers
  • Despite Schallmo's heroics and blistering hot form, junior netminder Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) recorded her first solo shutout of the season against four shots (two on target). Her record improves to a still undefeated 5-0-2.
  • The Beacons tallied a season-high 25 shots (nine on target), led by junior forward Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R) with six shots and two on target, and Schallmo with nine shots, four on target.
  • Booth supplied assists on two of the three goals scored, her first and second of the year.
Who's Next:
  • The Beacons' women's soccer team looks to keep the ball rolling again on Saturday, October 5 at 12:00 p.m from their home pitch at the James Cotter Field on the campus of UMass Boston against the Rhode Island College Anchormen in another LEC matchup.
