Women’s Soccer Flies Over the Owls on the Road

KEENE, N.H. (October 12, 2024) – The Beacons' women's soccer team returns to the Little East Conference win column following their 4-1 routing over the Keene State Owls from the Dr. Ron Butcher Field in Keene, N.H. on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
UMass Boston 4 – 1 Keene State College
UMass Boston: 9-2-3 (4-0-0 LEC)
Keene State College: 5-7-2 (1-3-1 Little East Conference)
How it Happened
  • Keene State opened scoring nearly six minutes into the half. The Owls' sophomore midfielder, Elizabeth Tschudin, received possession off a muffed pass. She took advantage of her open space, stepping into a deep shot that was placed perfectly beyond the Beacons' junior goalkeeper Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.)
  • From there on, it was all UMass Boston. First-year forward Kathryn Brown (Somers, Conn.) broke away from the Owls' defense all by her lonesome, but lost possession just before she could get a shot off from inside the Owls' 18-yard box. First-year forward Sofia Schallmo was able to put her body in front of the Owls' clearance, causing the ball to bounce around uncontrolled in the box. Schallmo was the first to put her foot to it, as she poked the shot just underneath the Owls' keeper to equalize scoring for her conference-leading 11th goal of the year. Schallmo would strike again following a penalty at the 16-minute mark for her 12th goal of the year.
  • The Beacons' graduate defensive anchor, Caileigh Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) would register UMass Boston's third goal of the game, her second of the season, off a perfectly placed shot directly from the corner. Her shot from the far side met the hands of the Owls' keeper but was bobbled and dropped behind the goal line for the Beacons' third.
  • The fourth and final of the day for UMass Boston was initiated by junior forward Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R.) as she broke away into space behind the Owls' midfield. Her inside cut with the left foot created space but lost possession off of a defender. First-year forward Devan Booth (Manchester, N.H.) was nearby to clean up possession as she one-touched a beautifully placed cross in the box to find Brown, fully vertical, as she connected with her head to put in her fifth goal of the season.
By the Numbers
  • UMass Boston outshot the Owls 19 (12 on target) to 11 (one on target), as the offensive provided a cutting edge. The Beacons also owned the advantage from the corner, amassing seven opportunities compared to the Owls' five. Schallmo led the way offensively for UMass Boston with four shots on goal and two goals. Booth recorded the game's only assist, as she served as one of the primary playmakers in the contest.
  • Cote played all 90 minutes between the pipes. While she may not have needed to record a save, her record improved to a still-undefeated 7-0-2 on the year.
Who's Next:
  • The Beacons are back in LEC Action next week on Wednesday, October 16, and Saturday, October 19. On Wednesday, the Beacons will travel to Gorham, Maine for possibly the biggest test for them yet, the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine, who currently stand in second place behind the Beacons on the LEC standings. On Saturday, the Beacons will play host to the Wolves of Western Connecticut as they return to the James Cotter Field.
