Men’s Hockey Wins Runner-Up at 58th Annual Codfish Bowl

BOSTON, MA (January 6, 2024)— The UMass Boston men's hockey team suffered a three-goal loss from the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink on Saturday evening against the Connecticut College Camels, who were ultimately awarded the 58th Codfish Bowl Championship cup.

The Beacons put up a valiant effort against the Camels, peppering the Camels' goalie Sean Dynan, whose clean sheet was enough to earn the goalie MVP of the 2024 tournament. The Beacons totaled 41 shots through three periods, however, Dynan rose to the occasion time and time again for the Camels. The Beacons were led offensively by senior defenseman Kevin Sadovski, who contributed sox efforts towards the pipe. Sadovski was backed by senior defenseman Blake Colemen, as Colemen totaled five shots on goal. Junior defenseman Michael Krupinski led the team in blocked shots with four deflections. Graduate goalie Same Best played his heart out, stopping 26 of the 29 shots he faced. UMass Boston went a cumulative 36-72, good for an even spit in the faceoff circles. Freshmen forward Jack Mortson and graduate forward Connor Foley each won a team-high nine of their 20 matchups in the faceoff circle.

Sophomore forward Jude Kurtas got things going for the Beacons to start the game, winning the initial puck drop for the Beacs. The Beacons had their best opportunity of the game in the first period. The Beacons outshot the Camels 18 to seven, while also going 0-2 on their power plays in the first period. However, Dynan was a brick wall for the Camels, as neither team was able to break the ice in the first period following the initial twenty minutes.

The second period was a different story for UMass Boston, as they found themselves lost from the driver's seat. The Camels regained offensive control following the Camels' opener from Michael DiMascolo nearly halfway through the second period. The Camels would ride their momentum to the end of the second period, as they ended the period outshooting the Beacons this time 13-14 while leading 1-0.

The third period saw the physicality and grittiness of the game turned up to 11, with the Beacons beginning to get scrappy, as the desperation grew to equalize. Before the Beacons could grow any momentum, they entered the third period down a man on the Camels' power play. Connecticut College was able to capitalize once again to stretch their lead to two goals. The Beacs put ten more solid efforts towards net but were ultimately unable to put one in the score sheet, as the Camels were able to net one more on an empty net in the Beacons' final efforts.

UMass Boston brings home the runners-up trophy for this year's Codfish Bowl tournament as the Camels raise the 2024 Codfish Bowl Championship trophy. With the result, the Beacons fall to 5-8-2, while the Camels improve to 4-5-2. The Beacons take the ice again next weekend, as they face off against the Castleton Spartans on Friday at 7:00 pm from Castleton VT, followed by 13th ranked nationally Skidmore College from Saratoga Springs, NY.
