Tarantino Stops 27 in Overtime Loss to Castleton

CASTLETON, V.T. - Three periods were not enough to decide UMass Boston Men's Ice Hockey's road contest with Vermont State University Castleton on Friday night. The two teams went to overtime knotted at one goal apiece before the Spartans eventually came away victorious by a final score of 2-1.

Vermont State University Castleton (6-10-0, 3-6-0 LEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The hosts were quick to test the Beacons young goaltender on Friday. Antonio Tarantino stopped four shots in the opening six minutes of the game before the Spartans stuck the fifth one in the net.

Tarantino locked in after the opening goal, saving five more shots in the first and all 10 he faced in the second period. Unfortunately for the Beacons, Castleton's Dominic Rodrigue was just as solid in goal. The netminder saved 12 shots in the first period and the first 11 he saw in the second.

The Beacons 12th shot of the second period, waged by Jakob Teply with just over five minutes left to play, finally found twine to even the score at one. Jude Kurtas and Corey Clifton were credited with assists on the tying goal.

The third period was a continuation of the stalemate between goaltenders. A pair of blocks from Chris Merryman helped keep the puck away from Tarantino, who saved all seven shots he saw in the third. Rodrigue, meanwhile faced down 15 shots and saved them all to send the game to overtime.

Just over two minutes into overtime the Spartans cracked Tarantino's streak of nearly 56 minutes of shutout hockey to take the game 2-1.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • In his first season of collegiate hockey, Tarantino has played over 60 minutes in four of his seven appearances
