NORTHFIELD, V.T. - UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey pulled off an upset to remember on Friday night. Facing eighth-ranked Norwich University in a hostile road environment, the Beacons scored goals in the first and second period while holding the Cadets to a long late score for the 2-1 victory.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 2, Norwich University 1
UMass Boston (6-9-3, 5-4-2 LEC)
Norwich University (12-5-2, 10-2-1 LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A stingy Norwich team held on to the puck for much of the opening minutes of the game, leaving the Beacons with little offense of which to speak. It took eight minutes and 26 seconds for the Beacons to wager their fifth shot of the game. That shot, however, was right on line. With an assist from
Hannah MacDougall setting her up,
Gianna Skrelja put her first goal into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.Â
Dominating time of possession throughout the game, Norwich was not shy about testing
Leah Bosch in the goal. Bosh, however, proved ready for the challenge. The sophomore tender racked up 23 saved in the first two periods, preserving the 1-0 lead for UMass Boston.
With the Norwich offense threatening, the Beacons were in search of an insurance goal throughout the second. Though it did not come until there were just 11 seconds remaining on the clock,
Jenna Majewski's unassisted score extended the lead all the same. With just 20 minutes remaining, the visitors held a 2-0 advantage over the Cadets.
Though Norwich spoiled Bosch's shutout in the final minute of the game, the goaltender stood strong to put the finishing touches on a 2-1 win for the underdogs.
