Lacrosse Drops Home Opener To MIT

Charlie Chapman led the Beacons with 4 goals

BOSTON, MA - UMass Boston Men's Lacrosse showed flashes of excellence in the second half of their home opener on Thursday afternoon. However, their 10-5 run over the final two quarters was not to overcome a strong MIT squad, who took the game by a final score of 21-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The MIT offense came out firing in the first quarter on Thursday. After opening up the game with a 6-0 lead, a Connor Smith goal was merely an interruption en route to a 9-1 lead heading into the second frame.

The game's second quarter saw more of the same from both sides. Connor Smith's second goal of the day was only accompanied by a Charlie Chapman score. Meanwhile, the Engineers racked up seven more goals, helping them surpass their scoring total from their first game in the opening half of their second.

The Beacons showed more fight in the second half, using multiple 3-0 runs to cut the lead to nine after the third quarter. Nolan Beauregard and Gavin Admirand each accounted for two of the Beacons seven goals in the frame.

Along with improved scoring, the Beacons saw a bump in goaltending in the second half courtesy of Freshman Broden Youngclaus. In his collegiate debut, Youngclaus withstood 17 shots, saving 12 in just under 32 minutes in net.

Despite finishing the game on a 3-0 run, the early deficit was too much for the Beacons to overcome. The visiting Engineers won the game by a final score of 21-13.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Chapman's team-leading four goals matched his career high, which he set in the 2022 LEC quarterfinals against Maine Maritime
  • The Beacons have scored double-digit goals in every game since their 15-9 loss against Plymouth State on April 20, 2019
  • Matt Lucozzi continued to thrive in the faceoff circle, winning 12 of his 19 matchups
  • The Beacons have lost 11 straight against MIT, dropping their record in the all-time series to 6-26

WHO'S NEXT

The Beacons will travel to New London, CT on next Tuesday, March 7 to face the Camels of Connecticut College. That game will begin at 7 PM.
