Women's Hockey Battles, Falls to William Smith

BOSTON, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Hockey made a late push for overtime on Friday night but the visitors from William Smith College overwhelmed, handing the Beacons their third straight home loss, 2-1.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, William Smith College 2

UMass Boston (3-5-3, 2-3-2 NEHC)
William Smith College (8-3-0, 4-1-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A smattering of William Smith penalties granted UMass Boston four power play opportunities, including almost two full minutes of a five-on-three advantage. The Beacons ripped 11 shots on goal in the opening frame but could not find the back of the net.

Strong goaltending from both sides continued late into the second period with both teams still scoreless as the clock ticked under five minutes. William Smith's Colleen Quirk broke the ice with just over two minutes to play, putting the visitors ahead 1-0. That lead quickly doubled courtesy of Emma Faso, who put the Herons up a pair just over a minute after Quirk's score.

With the Beacons needing a score to cut into the deficit, Jenna Wajewski's late goal hit like a thunderstorm following a drought. The goal put an end to an unfortunate streak of nearly 110 straight minutes of skating without a goal for UMass Boston.

The final five minutes of the game saw the Beacons pull out all of the stops in hopes of tying the game at two apiece. Their best efforts, however, came up just short. The Herons held on to send UMass Boston to their third conference loss.
