Women’s Ice Hockey Battles Against #11 Elmira College from The Edward T. Barry Ice Rink

BOSTON, MA (December 2, 2023) – The UMass women's ice hockey team battled against the number 11 nationally ranked Elmira College from the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink in Boston, MA but fell short 3-1 following a valiant effort from the Beacons against one of the nation's best squads.

The Beacons were led offensively by junior forward Ana Gustafson with a team-high three shots on goal, as the Beacs were able to put together eight solid chances against one of the nation's best squads. Sophomore goalie Leah Bosch took responsibility between the pipes for the Beacons and saved 31 of the 34 shots she faced, good for a 91% save percentage. The Beacs were able to put a body on six of the Soaring Eagles' shots toward the net. Senior forward Katie Wilbert took charge for the Beacons from the faceoff circle, winning six of the 11 faceoffs she participated in.

The Soaring Eagles brought their A-game to the Edward T. Barry from the initial drop, as they jumped out to an early two-goal lead following the first period. Soaring Eagles' goals were scored by Holley Riva (shorthanded), and Anna Lugge. Elmira would go on to strike again with six minutes elapsed in the second period.

The Soaring Eagles' third goal would be their final on the night, despite Bosch facing a barrage of shots. The Beacons were able to get one back with just over seven minutes expired in the third period, following first-year defender Gianna Skrelja's goal from beyond the red line to cut the lead to just two with time expiring. The Beacons would be unable to put another on the board, as time expired with the final score reading 3-1 in favor of Elmira.

The Beacons can hang their hat on holding one of the nation's best to only three goals on 34 shots, while also recording a goal of their own. The Beacons are back in action again Tuesday from New London, CT as they face off against Connecticut College in a non-conference matchup.
