Bosch Locks Down Late to Secure Draw Against Castleton

CASTLETON, V.T. - UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey closed out a weekend back-to-back with a 1-1 draw against Vermont State Castleton on Saturday afternoon. The result secured their first point in the New England Hockey Conference standings.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Vermont State Castleton 1

UMass Boston (1-1-2, 0-1-1 NEHC)
Vermont State Castleton (1-1-1, 1-0-1 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
As they have done so well to start the season, UMass Boston peppered the opposing keeper with shots, raining down 14 attempts in the first 15 minutes. The high volume of shots did nothing to affect the scoreboard, however, as the game was still knotted at zero with under five minutes left to play in the opening period.

Kristen Briggs broke the seal on the dueling shutouts, taking assists from Katie Wilbert and Margeaux Butters and sliding the puck past the goalie for her first career goal and a 1-0 lead.

UMass Boston continued to get their shots off in bunches testing the Castleton netminder 14 times in the second period, to no avail on the scoreboard. A pair of power plays in the second frame helped Vermont State even out the shots taken. It was not until after the power plays were killed off, however, that they found their first goal of the day to even the score at 1-1 with under three minutes to play in the period.

The teams traded power play opportunities in the third and overtime periods, but the goalies continued their dominant day between the pipes, freezing both offenses and holding on for the 1-1 draw.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Goalie Leah Bosch logged her second appearance of 65 minutes this season, once again holding up late to avoid an overtime loss
    • She recorded 23 saves against just one goal allowed
  • The Beacons have let up just one goal on 14 player-down opportunities, good for a conversion percentage of .71
  • Clubhouse point leaders Wilbert and Butters each added an assist for their third point of the season
  • As a team, UMass Boston has let up just two goals in the third period or later
  • The Beacons broke up a four-game losing streak against Castleton, earning their first point against the Spartans since the 2021-22 season

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will host a back-to-back next weekend, welcoming NEHC foes Norwich and New England College to the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink on Friday, November 10, and Saturday, November 11, respectively. Friday's game will be a 6 PM start and the puck will drop again on Saturday at 3 PM.
