Men’s Hockey Bounces Back in Offensive Onslaught Against Castleton Spartans in 7-1 Victory

BOSTON, MA (November 4, 2023) – The UMASS Boston men's ice hockey team followed up a rough game from the day prior with a 7-1 offensive onslaught against the Castleton University Spartans from the Edward T. Barry Rink in Boston MA, as six different Beacons lit up the score sheet on the evening to propel them toward their first regular season win of the 2023-2024 season.

The Beacons and the Spartans each let the shots rip tonight producing a cumulative 75 shots with the Beacons taking 40 of those shots compared to the Spartan's 35. Six different Beacons put their names on the score sheet, with senior defenseman Kevin Sadovski leading all scorers with two goals and an assist on shots. Sadovski finished plus four on the day. Junior forward Devin Moran scored in the second period, along with a pair of assists to go with a Sadovski and Jude Kurtas goal. Freshman forward Jack Mortson also recorded a goal and an assist in a special night from their home rink.

In the first period, Sadovski scored his first in a hasty initial five minutes, as he was assisted from graduate forward Conor Foley to open up a long score sheet for the Beacons. It wouldn't take long for Sadovski to find the back of the net again, as he would strike nylon again in the eighth minute of the first period, assisted by Koyle Bankauskas and Moran to widen the gap to two. The final goal of the first period came from senior forward Owen Bourdow off of Moran's first assist of the night. The Beacons concluded the first period with a 3-0 lead heading into the second.

The Second period continued to be all gas and no brakes from the Beacons. As Kurtas opened up scoring in the second period just a minute and a half into it. His goal came from Moran's second assist of the night along with Foley to bring the lead to 4-0 from a Beacon's power play. The Spartans would take advantage of a responding power play off a goal from Spartan's Andrew Stefura, as it would be the only Spartans goal of the night. The Beacons would respond just three minutes later as Moran would respond from the point off a flashy dish from Sadovski. The 5-1 lead wasn't sufficient enough for the Beacons as Foley would find the net for the final time in the second period off an Evan Goggins assist. Beacons ended the second period leading 6-1.

The final goal would come from the first-year Mortson from Ford as the Beacons would ultimately be unable to keep their foot on the gas, finishing the game 7-1 in an offensive onslaught.

Graduate goalie Sam Best hailed responsibility between the posts for the Beacons, playing all three periods and recording a total of 34 saves in the Beacons first win of the season, as they improved to 1-2-1 on the season, 1-1-0 in the New England Hockey Conference. The Beacons will look to keep the sticks hot as they hit the road next Friday to travel to Northfield, Vt as they take on the Norwich University Cadets.
