Maggio's Double Dip Gets Women's Ice Back in the Win Column

SALEM, Mass. - UMass Boston Women's Ice Hockey came to life on Saturday afternoon, sneaking four goals past the Salem State goaltender to cruise to a 4-1 conference victory.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 4, Salem State University 1

UMass Boston (3-2-3, 2-2-2 NEHC)
Salem State University (2-6, 1-3 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After being limited in their second scoreless tie of the season on Friday, the Beacons' offensive unit was itching for a fast start on Saturday. A fast start was exactly what they got courtesy of Melina Maggio's first career goal, assisted by Emily Hansen, to open the scoring after less than five minutes of play.

Just over a minute after Maggio got her first score, Hannah MacDougall took a pass from Ana Gustafson to the net, grabbing her first goal of the year.

Though it did not come as rapidly as the first two, Margeaux Butters finished off the trio of first period scores for UMass Boston, hitting paydirt off of an assist from Jenna Majewski in the 18th minute of the frame.

The squads traded goals in the second period, including Maggio's second goal of the day and of her career, but the game was well in hand for the Beacons. Starting goalie Leah Bosch doubled her save total on the day with seven in the third, icing the 4-1 win for the visitors.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Four goals is the most scored in a game by the Beacons this season
  • Bosch once again lowered her team-best goals against average to 1.22
  • Butters leads the team with three goals this season. Maggio is now tied for second with two
  • Katie Wilbert has yet to score a goal but is tied with Butters with a team-leading four points
  • The Beacons are 9-0 in the all-time series with Salem State

WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will return to the ice for the 16th Annual Women's Codfish Bowl Tournament next weekend. Their opening game will pit them against Amherst College on Saturday, November 25 at 4 PM. The winner of that game will face the winner of Bowdoin College vs. Suffolk University on Sunday at 4 PM.
