BOSTON, MA (November 16, 2023)—The UMASS Boston Beacons women's basketball team dropped their home opener against the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a hard-fought loss from Clark Gymnasium, as the Beacons are still figuring out their stride early in the season.
Despite the loss, graduate forward
Alexah Potter had herself an efficient night from the field, shooting 83% from the field (5-6), and 100% from the free throw line (2-2), on top of three rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Sunny Green was the primary playmaker for the Beacons, notching four assists for her teammates. Green was also active in the defensive halfcourt, as she also recorded two steals by forcing turnovers in transition.
The Beacs came out firing in the first quarter, shooting an efficient 63% on 7-11 shooting. However, they lost their groove in the second, shooting 26% on 4-11 shooting. The rest of the game the Beacs spent clawing to find a way out of the hole they dug themselves in, but the Engineers proved too much as they kept their foot on the gas through all four quarters.
With the loss, the Beacons fall to 0-3, still early in the season, with plenty of time to right the ship. They will look to bounce back this Saturday from Clark Gymnasium in Boston, MA against Fitchburg State University at 1:00 pm
