Boston, MA (November 11, 2023) – The UMASS Boston Beacons protect home ice today from the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink as sophomore forward
Emily Hansen's second-period strike was enough to put away the New England College Pilgrims 1-0 through three periods of play.
The Pilgrims were able to outshoot the Beacons with 35 shots on target compared to the Beacon's 27. Both teams recorded 13 blocked shots, with three Beacons players each recording two, with sophomore defender
Emma Webster,
Gabby Shontz, and
Katie Wilbert, each sacrificing their bodies to protect the slim UMB lead. Sophomore keeper
Leah Bosch recorded a 100% save rate and a clean sheet with 35 total saves in the victory for the Beacons.
The first period was back and forth between the two teams, as the Beacons and Pilgrims took the first period to figure each other out tactically while finding their groove on the ice. Shot totals following the first period were a tight six to five in favor of the Beacons.
In the second period, the Beacons were able to capitalize on a power play with a Hansen goal off a Webster assist for the 1-0 lead to catch the Pilgrims on their heels. The second period shot totals concluded dead even for the Beacons and the Pilgrims at eight a piece.
Both teams seemed to come alive in the third period with offensive surges. The Beacons recorded 13 shots in the third period, compared to the Pilgrims 22 shots toward net. The Beacons played heavily in their defensive end while the Pilgrims emptied their net to bring on the extra skater.
The Beacons held on to their second-period power-play goal long enough to withstand the Pilgrims for the 1-0 victory on their home ice at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.
The Beacs improve to 2-2-2 overall this season, 1-2-1 in the New England Hockey Conference, as the New England College Pilgrims fall to 0-6-0 overall, 0-4 in NEHC play.
The Beacons tighten their skates again in NEHC action next Friday on the road against the University of Southern Maine.
