One For The Win Column! Women's Soccer Surges Past Wheaton

NORTON, MA - Senior goalkeeper Maria Spylios' second clean sheet of the season helped women's soccer earn its first victory of the season on Wednesday evening as they shut out Wheaton by a final score of 2-0.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 2, Wheaton College 0

UMass Boston (1-4-2)

Wheaton College (3-4-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

A pair of Beacon goals would be more than enough to secure the Beacons' first victory of the season as Maria Spylios did not let up a single goal in her 90 minutes in net. Spylios' second shutout in four games lowered her GAA to 1.00 on the season. UMass Boston broke the scoreless tie in the 32nd minute courtesy of junior midfielder Elia Velez' first collegiate goal, assisted by senior forward Kaylee Haynes. The assist gave Haynes the first point of her senior campaign.

Despite controlling the ball for most of the first half, the Lyons failed to pose a true offensive threat. Of their 10 first-half shots, only two were on goal. In the second half, Haynes added to the scoring, knocking in her first goal of the season in the 68th minute. Freshman forward Callia Eaton joined in on the offensive breakout for the Beacons, recording her first career assist on the Haynes goal.

Trailing by two with just over 20 minutes to play, the Lyons were unable to muster up a shot on goal for the rest of the match as the Beacons earned their first win of the 2022 season, 2-0.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMass Boston broke a five-game scoring drought, recording their first goal since September 2nd against U.S. Coast Guard Academy
  • The Beacons' two goals against Wheaton matched their season total coming into Wednesday's game
  • Despite trailing in total shots 16-10, the Beacons held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal
  • Spylios has recorded 16 shutouts in 44 career games played
  • This was the Beacons' first ever win against Wheaton, improving their record to 1-3 all-time
