Softball Rolls Past Curry For Non-Conference Sweep

Beacons combined for 36 hits in the two wins

MILTON, Mass. – The bats came alive in a big way as softball cruised to a non-conference sweep as they rolled past Curry College with 12-5 and 11-1 wins Thursday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
On the day, the Beacons combined for 36 hits, a season-high against a single opponent. Game one was close through the first four innings with score tied at 2-2. UMass Boston erupted offensively in the fifth plating seven runs to blow out the host Colonels.

After a scoreless sixth, the Beacons tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh. Curry tried to make a comeback but was set aside after scoring their third run.

Haley Tilberry had a huge showing at the plate in game one as she went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Amauri English pinch hit and went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kaylee Bruce recorded three hits, while Jordan Toomey went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

 Haley Catania earned her fifth win in the circle after allowing the five runs on seven hits, while striking out three.

In the nightcap, UMass Boston put-up a pair of runs in the first and third innings. They then added seven more runs over the final three frames to secure the sweep.

Gabriella Messier and Brianna Melchionda combined for eight of the Beacons 17 hits. Melchionda posted a career-high five RBI and a run scored in the one-sided victory. The sophomore finished a double shy of the cycle have recorded a home run and a triple.

In the circle Melchionda allowed just five hits, while allowing one run and one walk. She also matched her program record for strikeouts in a game with 14.

  • All-time the Beacons are now 9-5 against Curry College
  • UMass Boston has now won five straight and seven of their last eight meetings
  • Thursday's contest, was the first meeting between UMB and Curry since April 14, 2016
  • The Beacons 19th win marks just the sixth time in program history that UMB has recorded 19 or more wins in a season
WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will host Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the final home games of the 2022 regular season. Following the conclusion of the two games, the Beacons will honor their senior members.
