Amauri English drove in the game-winning run in the nightcap to earn the split

GORHAM, Maine – Softball continued their strong play as they bounced back from a 6-4 game one loss to earn a 1-0 win in game two to earn a Little East Conference split with the University of Southern Maine Tuesday afternoon at USM Softball Stadium.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 4, Southern Maine 6
UMass Boston 1, Southern Maine 0

UMass Boston (15-7, 5-3 Little East Conference)
Southern Maine (10-11, 4-2 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In game one the Beacons struck first in the huge Little East Conference match-up. Amauri English plated her first of two runs on the day, to give the Beacons the early 1-0 advantage. They then added their second run in the third on a Jordan Toomey on an RBI single to center.

The Huskies responded in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs to take the one-run advantage. They then added three more in the fourth to take a 6-2.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, the Beacons tried to rally in the top of the seventh scoring a pair of runs to make it a two-run affair. Brianna Melchionda and Haley Tilbery each knocked-in a run.

Unfortunately, the Huskies would get out of the inning to secure the victory.

Emily Doble was handed the loss after going five complete, allowing 10 hits, six runs, three earned, and striking out two.

In the nightcap, English plated the game's only run, which came in the top of the seventh. The freshman's hit was just the fourth for the Beacons, and sixth in the contest for both teams.

Melchionda was once again brilliant in the circle, holding the Huskies to just two hits, while striking out eight.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The game-two win for the Beacons snapped a five-game skid to the Huskies
