Softball Closes Spring Break Trip with Wins over Mount Aloysius and Wilson

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The UMass Boston softball team capped off is 2022 southern swing with a pair of victories Friday, defeating Mount Aloysius College 5-3 and Wilson College 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Beacons trailed 3-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth in their first game of the day against Mount Aloysius, where they rallied for three runs for the 5-3 final. Junior Sydney Sanden (Riverton, Conn.) led of the inning with a double to left and crossed the plate with the game-tying run on freshman Amauri English's (North Providence, R.I.) double to left. Freshman Christina Panagiotopoulos (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a single to right that plated English with the game-winning run, and eventually scored herself on a sac fly off the bat of freshman Kaylee Bruce (Foxborough, Mass.).
 
UMass Boston struck first in the bottom of the second inning, with Panagiotopoulos scoring on an wild pitch and junior Haley Tilberry (Moosic, Pa.) heading home on senior Sarah Harlinski's (Sturbridge, Mass.) infield single. The Mounties answered in the top of the fourth, Sophomore Tawnya Holben scored on a ground out to get Mount Aloyisius on the board before freshman Lexi Wilt drove in freshman Samantha Moschetteri h a single to left. The Mounties took their only lead when freshman Ella Pearson scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
 
Senior Hayley Catania (Amesbury, Mass.) improved 3-1 in the circle for the Beacons after yielding three runs on six hist with four strikeouts in her complete-game effort. Sophomore Emily Cochran fell to 1-1 for Mount Aloysius after allowing three runs on four hits in her two innings of relief work.
 
UMass Boston won a pitcher's duel in its second game of the day. Sophomore Emily Doble (Danvers, Mass.) scattered eight hits while notching four Ks as she tossed a complete-game shutout for UMass Boston, picking up her first win of the season.
 
The lone run of the game was scored in the bottom of the third for the Beacons. Harlinski got things going with a two-out infield single before stealing second and scoring on freshman Gabriella Messier's (Berkley, Mass.) single to center.
 
Sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, Idaho) fell to 0-4 after surrendering just one run on four hits in a complete-game showing for Wilson.

WHAT'S NEXT?
 
The Beacons will be back in action Thursday for their home-opener against Bridgewater State University. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m.
