Lacrosse Sinks Pirates In Overtime To Win Fifth Straight

Gavin Admirand netted the game-winner in OT to give the Beacons a 16-15 win at Southwestern University (TX)

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Lacrosse took home a thrilling overtime victory in their first game of a Texas road trip, with Gavin Admirand delivering the game-winner with 2:03 left in the first OT to lift UMB to a 16-15 win over Southwestern University.

UMass Boston (5-0)
Southwestern (6-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In overtime an offensive drive by the Beacons looked to be fruitless after a shot on goal was saved by the Southwestern goaltender. However, the Pirates failed to successfully clear the ball. A ground ball recovery by Admirand led to an unassisted goal that gave UMB the walk-off win.

After opening the fourth quarter tied at 11, the Beacons went on a 4-1 run, giving them a 15-12 lead with seven minutes left to play.

The Pirates would not go quietly, though, as they responded to the Beacons run with three straight goals of their own. Tying the game with two minutes left to play. Both teams would hold their own on defense for the remainder of the fourth, sending the game to overtime.

The third quarter saw offensive explosions from both teams as the Beacons scored five goals to the Pirates' eight. For the third time in three quarters, Darragh Fahey beat the clock, netting a goal with under ten seconds left to play.

Beacons goaltending was solid totaling 23 saves between Trevor Koppy and Christian Meinhold respectively.

Fahey led the Beacons with six points (3g, 3a), while Admirand capped-off his game-winning performance with five goals. Greg Wolff netted four goals, while Michael Claflin matched the team-high with three assists.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Both teams were 0-3 on man up opportunities
  • UMass Boston was successful on 20 of their 26 clear attempts
