Leffler Lifts Beacons Past Plymouth State

Katie Leffler scored the lone goal in her 100th collegiate contest

PLYMOUTH, N.H.—Senior Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) scored with 46 seconds left in regulation, to lift UMass Boston to a key 1-0 victory over host Plymouth State University on Tuesday afternoon Hanaway Rink.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, Plymouth State University 0
(UMass Boston 11-11, New England Hockey Conference 10-6)
(Plymouth State 6-15-1, New England Hockey Conference 4-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Leffler scored the game's lone goal off a wild scramble in front. Off an offensive zone draw, the puck got stuck underneath a Panthers player just outside the crease. Rachael Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) and Liz Kramp (Farmington Hills, Mich.) both worked to pry the puck loose and eventually the puck slid out to Leffler below the far circle. The senior took one touch and then roofed a shot that went over the Panthers goalies' shoulder and under the bar.

The goal marked Leffler's third tally in her last two games and her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

In net, sophomore Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.) posted her third collegiate shutout with 21 saves. She made made nine stops in the first period, four in the second and eight saves in the third.

Plymouth State sophomore goalie Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) was the tough-luck loser after making 39 saves on 40 shots.

Neither side could wrestle control during a tight first period. The Beacons killed off an early 5-on-3 chance to outshoot the hosts 10-9 in the second period.

UMass Boston outplayed the hosts in the second period, as they outshot Plymouth State 15-4, but neither side could find the back of the net.

Kramp had the Beacons best opportunity, when she was sprung for a breakaway chance but her shot was knocked down by Julian and cleared away.

The Beacons continued pressing the issue and finally scored in the game's final minute. Plymouth State pulled the goalie from there and tried to even the score, but Kennedy stood tall and made one save and knocked another potential shot away just before the buzzer.
