Women's Hockey Dominates JWU 8-1

The Beacons scored a season-high eight goals in the victory

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's hockey bounced back in a huge way, as the Beacons defeated travel partner Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

BY THE NUMBERS
UMass Boston 8, Johnson & Wales 1
(UMass Boston 10-11, New England Hockey Conference 9-6)
(Johnson & Wales 10-11-1, New England Hockey Conference 7-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling 3-2 to the Wildcats on Saturday and giving up an early goal, UMass Boston exploded for a season-high eight goals in a dominant win.

Seniors Jane Ann Drill (Madison, Wisc.) and Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) both finished with four points in the win to pace the Beacons. Drill doubled her career-high for points in a game by scoring a power-play goal and adding a career-best three assists. Leffler set a new career-high in points as well, as she posted two goals and two assists.

Freshman Ana Gustafson (Clarkston, Mich.) matched Leffler with two goals and finished with a career-best three points in the win.

Fellow freshmen Liz Kramp (Farmington, Hills, Mich.) and Sydney Boyle (Chisago City, Minn.) and senior Rachael Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) also scored in the win. Kramp added two assists and Boyle's goal was not only the first goal/point of her career, but also proved to be the game-winning goal.

In net, Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.) earned her 10th collegiate victory in the contest.

Johnson & Wales freshman Soph Hamel scored the lone goal of the afternoon for the Wildcats.

Freshman Anna Maulson took the loss after allowing three goals on 10 shots in the first 17:11. Fellow freshman Sofia Tamayo came on and allowed five goals over the final 42:49.

Johnson & Wales took a 1-0 lead after just 2:29. With the Wildcats on the power-play, Hamel ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that went just under the bar.

UMass Boston responded with three-straight goals to end the first, including two goals in a 64-second span.

Gustafson tied the game at 6:01 when she skated in the zone 1-on-3 and ripped a wrister that beat Maulson glove slide. Boyle gave the Beacons the lead for good at 7:05, when she sent the goalie the wrong way with a low shot. The Beacons made it 3-1 at 17:11, when Drill picked up a Leffler rebound and roofed a shot for a power-play goal.

The Beacons power-play would put the game out of reach in the second period. UMass Boston went 2-3 on the man advantage in the period with goals from Leffler (12:50) and Kramp (18:38).

UMass Boston made it a rout in the third period.

Leffler pushed the lead to 6-1 with a breakaway goal at 4:26. Gustafson redirected a Drill shot on the power-play to make it 7-1 and Burum roofed a shot from in close with 1:48 left in regulation to close out the scoring.
