Men's Hockey Routs JWU 5-0 on Senior Day

The Beacons honored their five senior members prior to the game

BOSTON, Mass.—Five different players scored and Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) posted his fourth shutout of the season, to lead UMass Boston men's hockey past Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 5-0 on Senior Day.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 5, Johnson & Wales 0
(UMass Boston 13-7-2, New England Hockey Conference 9-4-2)
(Johnson & Wales 4-18, New England Hockey Conference 2-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Seniors Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.) and Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) and junior Dakota Concannon (Warwick, N.Y.) all finished with a goal and an assist in the Beacons' final regular-season home game.

Prior to the game, UMass Boston honored the program's five seniors. The quintet of Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas), Evan Rochowiak (Livonia, Mich.), Evan Heldt (Sylvania, Ohio), Peters and Nitkin improved to 46-26-4 for their career.

Junior Andy Walker (Detroit, Mich.) and freshman Devin Moran (Leominster, Mass.) also scored in the victory. Skinner paced all Beacons skaters with two assists in the victory.

In net, Best tied Utica College's Sean Dickson for the Division III lead with his fourth shutout of the season. Best stopped 17 shots to tie Bailey MacBurnie ('20) and Billy Faust ('16) for the program record for shutouts in a single-season.

Johnson & Wales sophomore goalie Jaxon Friedman made 56 saves on 61 shots in the loss. The Wildcats netminder made 22 saves in each of the first two periods.

UMass Boston accumulated a 22-6 edge in shots during the first period, but neither team could wrestle control during a stanza without any goals or penalties.

The Beacons broke the scoreless deadlock 4:55 into the second, when Walker scored off feeds from Skinner and Nitkin.

UMass Boston doubled the advantage at 8:22 of the period. Skinner fed a wide-open Peters at the near post and he tapped it into a wide-open net for this 10th goal of the year.

Nitkin pushed the lead to 3-0 at 17:31. The Wildcats controlled the puck in their own zone, but Nitkin prodded the puck loose and then deeked out the goalie for his league-leading 15th goal of the season.

UMass Boston made it 4-0 at 5:30 of the third period. This time it was Peters and Concannon setting up Moran for his third collegiate goal.

Concannon capped off the scoring at 10:16. The junior came away with a loose puck off the boards, wove his way through traffic and then lifted a shot past the Wildcats goalie.

Johnson & Wales had a 5-on-3 chance late in the contest but the Beacons didn't allow the Wildcats to get a single shot on target.
