Men's Hockey Cruises Past JWU 6-1

Six different Beacons scored in the victory

ATTLEBORO, Mass.—Six different Beacons scored to lead UMass Boston men's hockey past host Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 6-1 on Tuesday night at the New England Sports Village.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 6, Johnson & Wales 3
(UMass Boston 14-7-2, New England Hockey Conference 10-4-2)
(Johnson & Wales University 4-19, New England Hockey Conference 2-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons scored three goals in a 1:21 span late in the first period to take control and added three third-period goals, to earn the home-and-home sweep of the Wildcats.

Ty Mathews (Auburn, Mass.), Michael Krupinski (Dallas, Texas), Kolye Bankauskas (Coventry, R.I.), Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.), Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas) and Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) all scored in the victory.

In net, junior goalie Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) made 13 saves on 14 shots to improve to 12-3-2.

Connor Cameron scored the lone goal for the hosts-who saw their losing streak extend to 10 games in a row.

Freshman goalie Jacob Perrin made 40 saves on 46 shots to fall to 1-10 on the season.

After a scoreless first 17 minutes, UMass Boston exploded for three goals in a 1:21 span.

Mathews opened the scoring at 17:03 off of passes from Alex Duncan (Andover, Mass.) and Jacob Banks (Westminster, Mass.).

The Beacons doubled their lead 23 seconds later, when Devin Moran (Leominster, Mass.) found Krupinski at the blue line and the freshmen's shot got through traffic to beat Perrin.

UMass Boston capped off the scoring run at 18:24. This time it was Bankauskas finding the back of the net, with Owen Bourdow (Saginaw, Mich.) picking up the assist.

Johnson & Wales kept the game within striking distance thanks to Cameron's goal at 19:18.

The Beacons would blow the game open in the third period.

Peters made it 4-1 at 8:38, when he skated in one-on-one with the goalie and lifted a backhand over a diving Perrin. Evan Heldt (Sylvania, Ohio) was credited with an assist on the play.

UMass Boston tacked on a fifth goal at 13:55. Nolan Barrett (Wayne, N.J.) found Skinner along the near boards and the senior rifled a shot past Perrin.

The Beacons capped off the scoring with a power-play goal. Davis Browning (Dallas, Texas) found Nitkin below the circle and the senior ripped a shot over Perrin's shoulder for his team-leading 16th goal.
