Women's Soccer Settles For Tie With Panthers

The Beacons extended their home unbeaten streak to 19 games

BOSTON, Mass.—Despite tripling up visiting Plymouth State University in shots, UMass Boston women's soccer was forced to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime conference tie on Saturday evening at James Cotter Field.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Plymouth State University 1 (2OT)
(UMass Boston 5-2-2, Little East 1-0-1)
(Plymouth State University 4-1-1, Little East 1-0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Maggie Kelley (Paxton, Mass.) gave the Beacons the lead in the 29th minute, but Plymouth State's senior Jordan Meier tied the game in the 63rd to finish the scoring.

Kaylee Haynes (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) each picked up assists on the Kelley goal.

In net, Maria Spylios (Leominester, Mass.) made two saves on three shots.

Plymouth State senior Cat Robbins made a season-high nine saves to keep the Beacons at bay.

UMass Boston dominated the Panthers through the first 90 minutes but struggled to find a second goal.

The Beacons finally broke through in the first half on Kelley's third goal of the season. Crawford headed the ball to Haynes who's first touch found Kelley. The freshman settled the ball and then ripped a right-footed shot that went just off the end of Robbins' fingertips and into the goal.

The Beacons had a golden chance to double the lead in the 56th minute. Senior Grace McGettrick (Marshfield, Mass.) chased after a through ball and beat the keeper to the ball, but her attempted chip landed just wide of the near post.

Plymouth State evened the score at 62:27. Tess LeDuc passed the ball to Meier in space and her right-footed rocket from distance ended up in the top right-corner for a 1-1 game.

The Beacons continued to push but found themselves tied 1-1 after 90 minutes despite a 23-4 shot advantage.

Overtime saw a much cagier affair, with the Beacons again earning the better chances.

Crawford nearly won the game in the 96th minute. Her right-footed shot from outside the box clanged off the underside of the crossbar and the Beacons were ruled offside on the ensuing scramble.

Plymouth State forced a pair of saves from Spylios in the second overtime but neither side was able to truly trouble the opposing keeper.
