Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) notched a hat trick to lead the UMass Boston men's soccer team to a 5-1 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Monday night at Swenson Field.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 5, Bridgewater State 1
(UMass Boston 4-2)
(Bridgewater State 2-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
De Andrade notched his fourth collegiate hat trick and added an assist on the night to lead the Beacons.
Senior
Cam Pattison (Cohasset, Mass.) added his first collegiate goal and
Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.) tacked on his second goal in the Beacons' past three games.
UMass Boston opened the scoring just 3:08 into the game as the Beacons capitalized on a Bears giveaway. Off a short pass from classmate
Yuran Teixeira (Praia, Cape Verde), de Andrade rifled a shot into the right side of the net from 20-yards out.
The Bears nearly tied the game in the 13th minute as a well-place shot by junior forward Robson Montrond was knocked over the bar by leaping UMass Boston freshman keeper
JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.).
Montrond would, however, notch the equalizer with his team-leading third goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Junior defender Joseph Madden Jr. set things up with a long throw-into the box, a Beacons defender attempted a clearance, but sent the ball directly to Montrond on the right side who deposited a shot inside the far post.
Devine made another leaping stop of a Montrond shot with 2:39 left to play in the first half as the two teams headed to the intermission with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
After a mostly even first half in terms of shots and chances, UMass Boston came out and dominated the hosts in the final 45 minutes.
UMass reclaimed the lead on de Andrade's second goal of the night and team-leading seventh of the season in the 54th minute. Off a restart from the left side, de Andrade ripped a shot that deflected off a Bridgewater defender at the wall and into the right side of the cage.
The Beacons extended the lead to 3-1 as they capitalized on an ill-advised pass in the 61st minute. Pattison forced the turnover and also scored on the play as he rifled a shot inside the left post from 12 yards out off a short back pass from classmate
Gerardo Castaneda (Providence, R.I.).
UMass Boston was awarded a penalty kick in the 74th and de Andrade buried the rebound of his own PK attempt following an outstanding save by Bridgewater State goalkeeper Lukas Ekmanis to complete the hat trick.
DeAlmeida capped off the scoring in the 76th minute with his second goal of the season. A crossing pass from de Andrade was knocked away by a BSU defender. The ball, however, went right to DeAlmeida who buried a shot inside the left post.
UMass Boston controlled play in the second half as the Beacons outshot the Bears, 12-0, over the final 45 minutes and did not give up a corner kick attempt.
