Women's Basketball Falls In LEC Opener

Meg Dixon led the Beacons with 25 points in the conference loss

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Led by Anna Barry's double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, Eastern Connecticut State University handed women's basketball a 65-53 Little East Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 53, Eastern Connecticut State 65

UMass Boston (1-6, 0-1 Little East Conference)
Eastern Connecticut State (4-4, 1-0 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Looking for their first conference win since the 2019-20 season, the Beacons came out firing in the first two quarters. They also played some of their best defense by far, especially in the opening stanza. The Beacons actually led after the first 10 minutes, 15-13. ECSU countered with a 19-10 second quarter to take a 32-25 lead into the break.

ECSU took total control of Saturday's contest as they doubled-up the Beacons in the third quarter 16-8. UMB tried to close the deficit in the final quarter, as they outscored the Warriors 20-17. Unfortunately the final push was not enough as the Warriors survived the Beacons comeback bid.

Meg Dixon (Hanover, Mass.) had another huge game for the Beacons as she dropped 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, 4-of-8 from distance. She also grabbed 10 boards for the Beacons to cap-off her conference opener.

Jasharee Greene (Boston, Mass.) finished with 15 points and six boards in LEC debut, as the freshman shot 6-for-13 from the field.

Julie Keckler led the Warriors offense with 19 points, while Jenna Serrantino finished 13 points and nine boards.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Beacons shot 33.3% (19-57) from the field, while the Warriors finished shooting 40.0%
  • ECSU held a 45-30 advantage on the glass
  • Dixon's double-double was the third of her career and second in three games. She finished with 24 points and 19 rebounds against Wellesley College on November 20.
  • All-time the Beacons are 11-70 against ECSU
