Women's Hockey Earns First Win Of The Year

Beacons down NEC 7-1 to give head coach Danielle Blanchard her first coaching win



BOSTON, Mass. – Led by a four-point day from Cailey Kozich (Wexford, Pa.) and Liz Kramp (Farmington Hills, Mich.) women's hockey earned their first win of the 2021-22 season as they cruised past New England College by the final of 7-1 Saturday afternoon in the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Not only did Saturday mark the first win of the season for the Beacons, but it also marked the first career head coaching win for Danielle Blanchard. The former Yale University assistant coach, took over behind the Beacons bench a week before the regular season started.

The Beacons used a pair of three goal periods to clinch the conference victory. Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) got UMB on the board early in the first, as she put away a power-play goal off an assist from Kozich. Three minutes later, NEC tied the contest for the first and only time. The goal also marked the first of the season for the Lady Pilgrims.

The tied the score would last just 24 seconds as Kramp registered her first goal of the contest, with Kozich picking-up her second helper.

She would then tally her first goal of the game on the 16:09 mark to make it a 3-1 affair, which would stand until the first intermission.

The Beacons quickly made it 4-1 as Cozich triggered the horn 19 seconds into the new stanza, with Kramp assisting on the play. NEC would hold the Beacons offense at bay for the next 17 minutes, until Addie Budington (Winnetka, Ill.) rippled the twine to earn her first collegiate goal, with Kramp assisting on the play.

Jessica Lopopolo (San Jose, Calif.) joined the first time goal scorer list as she scored the Beacons sixth goal with less than a minute to play before the second intermission. Katie Wilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa.) completed the rout for the Beacons at the 5:27 mark of the third, with her first career goal. Kramp picked-up her third assist of the contest to complete her career day, with Corin Trejchel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also earning an assist.

Between the pipes Victoria Kennedy (Winthrop, Mass.) earned her first win as a Beacon after making just 10 stops.

Cianna Weir had a busy day for the Pilgrims making 59 stops, including 24 in the third period.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Beacons are now 22-9-2 against NEC and have won 15-straight dating back to February 1, 2012
  • Beacons finished 1-for-3 on the power-play, while NEC went 0-for-2
  • Beacons outshot NEC 66-11
  • Kramp led all players with a +5 rating and also had her first collegiate goal in the win
