Comeback Falls Short For Women’s Hockey In Codfish Title Game

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by the Tournament's MVP in Julia Surgenor Bowdoin College held off a women's hockey comeback bid to earn a 4-2 win in the championship game of the 14th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

UMass Boston (4-5-0)
Bowdoin College (2-2-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston erased a 3-0 Bowdoin lead with goals from Ana Gustafson (Clarkston, Mich.) and Hanna MacDougall (South Dartmouth, Mass.). Trailing by one, the Beacons offense looked to complete the comeback as they tried everything in their power to score the equalizer. One of their best chances came in the final moments of regulation, when the Beacon added the extra forward. The Beacons crashed the net looking for their third goal of the contest, but the crucial shot missed just wide.
Bowdoin sealed the victory with just over 40 seconds to play on an empty-netter to secure the program's third tournament title, first since 2017.

For Surgenor, she closed out the two-day tournament with a combined five points (3g, 2a). Izzi Stoddard got the Polar Bears on the scoreboard in the first 37 seconds of the contest, with Surgenor picking-up her first of two assists.

Just over two minutes later, Bowdoin made it a 2-0 lead with Elly Whitmore finding the back of the net. Peyton Mulhern completed the 3-0 run for the Polar Bears just over a minute into the second stanza.

Gustafson ended the Polar Bears shutout bid when she pushed in her second goal of the season midway through the period. MacDougall made it a one score affair after registering a highlight real goal at 4:43 of the final frame.

Stoddard, who assisted Bowdoin's second goal, capped-off her three point game with the empty netter in the final minute of regulation.
