Women’s Basketball Falls In Colby Tip-Off Championship Game

Beacons had three players finish with a game-high 12 points

WATERVILLE, Maine – A 24 point third quarter lifted Colby College to a 67-57 win over women's basketball in the title game of the Colby Tip-Off Classic Sunday afternoon at Crook Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Meg Dixon (Hanover, Mass.), Sunny Green (Brewster, Mass.), and Keriann Farina (Arlington, Mass.) each dropped in 12 points to lead all scorers. Dixon along with Rayna Gonzalez also grabbed a game-high 10 boards as the Beacons tried to claim their second straight win of the 2021-22 season.

The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair with Colby holding a slight 19-18 edge. The Mules would then hold the Beacons to nine points, while dropping in 14 in the second quarter to head into the break with a 33-27 advantage.

The third period saw the Mules erupt for 24 points, as they shot 50% from the field and 50% from distance, while the Beacons shot just 14%.

UMass Boston tried to erase the deficit in the final 10 minutes of regulation, as they hit their stride shooting over 47%.

The Beacons managed to cut the Mules lead to eight with just under two minutes to play, but they were never able to get any closer, as Colby hung on for the win.

  • On the night the Beacons shot 36.7% from the field and 37.% from 3-point range
  • Colby held a 36-35 advantage in rebounds
  • The Mules turned the Beacons 21 turnovers into 31 points, which gave them the edge on the scoreboard
  • Sunday's meeting was the first between the Beacons and the Mules since 2017
  • Colby is now 13-3 all-time against the Beacons, and have won back-to-back games
WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will be back in action on December 4 when they travel to Eastern Connecticut State University to open up Little East Conference play. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
