Elmira College Skates Past #15 Men's Hockey 5-2

Senior Ethan Nitkin scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.—Host Elmira College scored the final five goals of the contest to earn a 5-2 conference win over #15 UMass Boston men's hockey on Saturday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.

THE BASICS
Elmira College 5, #15 UMass Boston 2
(UMass Boston 4-3-1, New England Hockey Conference 3-2-1)
(Elmira College 5-1-1, New England Hockey Conference 2-1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the second-straight day, #15 UMass Boston got off to a strong start but couldn't overcome a slow second stanza on the road.

Senior Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) and junior Jake Adkins (Centennial, Colo.) each scored in the first period to give the Beacons a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Elmira turned the game on it's head with two goals in the final six minutes of the second, including a goal with one second remaining in the period. The Eagles carried that momentum into the third, as they took the lead 1:24 into the stanza and added two goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Sophomore goalie Connor McAnanama (Agawam, Mass.) made his second collegiate start for the Beacons. He made a career-high 30 saves in the contest, including stopping the first 20 shots he faced.

Elmira's Chris Janzen picked up the victory after making 33 saves, including 30 over the final two frames.

Nitkin gave UMass Boston a 1-0 lead 9:30 into the game, when he scored an unassisted short-handed goal.

Less than four minutes later, Adkins took feeds from Kolye Bankauskas (Coventry, R.I.) and Gino Carabelli (Shelby Township, Mich.) and beat Janzen glove side to make it 2-0 UMass Boston at 13:09.

UMass Boston went into the first intermission leading 2-0 thanks to the strong play of McAnanama. The Beacons were outshot 16-5 in the period, but the sophomore stopped every shot he faced to stymie the hosts.

The second period would be the exact opposite. UMass Boston jumped all over the hosts and earned a 17-6 edge in shots but the Beacons couldn't add to their lead.

Elmira broke the deadlock with a goal at 14:10 from Janis Vizbelis and the Eagles took all the momentum into the intermission when Mathieu Gervais scored at 19:59.

The hosts took the lead for good on a Shawn Kennedy goal 1:24 into the third period and would add two more late goals. Both teams would pile up 13 shots in the period, but the Beacons couldn't find a way past Janzen.
