UTICA, N.Y.—UMass Boston men's hockey outshot #1 SUNY Geneseo 34-26, but the top team in the nation scored six unanswered goals to advance to the Championship Game of the Utica College Thanksgiving Showcase.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston struck first against the Knights and were even through the first 25 minutes, but a pair of quick strikes in the second period gave #1 SUNY Geneseo the lead for good.Â

Alex Duncan (Andover, Mass.) and senior
Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.) each scored their fourth goals of the season in the loss.Â

Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas) all picked up an assist in the loss.Â

Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) took the loss, after stopping 15 of 20 shots in the first 41:54. Sophomore
Connor McAnanama (Agawam, Mass.) made five saves on six shots in the final 18:06.Â

SUNY Geneseo junior goalie Matt Petizian made a career-high 32 saves on 34 shots to improve to 4-0-0 on the season. Petizian made 11 saves in the first period, eight more in the second and stopped the first 13 shots he faced in the third.Â

UMass Boston opened the scoring 8:26 into the contest. Duncan took feeds from Daluisio and Bourdow and ripped a shot past Petizian for a 1-0 advantage.Â

The Knights answered back just the midway point of the period, when Dan Bosio scored off a Henry Cleghorn pass at 10:03.Â

The two sides would stay even for the next 15 minutes, before SUNY Geneseo struck for two goals in a 39-second span. Peter Morgan gave the Knights the lead at 5:14 and Justin Cmunt made it 3-1 at 5:53.Â

Despite the two goals, UMass Boston managed to outshoot the Knights 8-6 in the stanza.Â

SUNY Geneseo put the game away in the third with another two goals in quick succession. Domenic Garozzo made it 4-1 just 47 seconds into the period and Tyson Gilmour added a short-handed tally at 1:54.Â

The Knights would add one final goal, a power-play tally at 10:31.Â

After struggling to get a power-play goal all afternoon long, Peters lit the lamp with one second to go in regulation.Â

THE BASICS
- UMass Boston outshot the Knights 34-26 and led or were tied in the category in all three periods. Geneseo held a slight 40-36 edge on face-offs.Â
- Friday's meeting was the first-ever contest between the two programs.Â
- UMass Boston finished 1-6 on the power-play, while SUNY Geneseo went 1-3.Â
- Six of the Beacons first nine games this season have been played against teams in this week's USCHO.com National Poll. The Beacons have played five of those games on the road.Â
- The Beacons and Knights both appeared in the 2016 NCAA Division III Frozen Four. That season Peter Belisle (UMass Boston) and Chris Schultz (SUNY Geneseo) were named the Co-STX/American Hockey Coaches of America Division III Men's Coaches of the Year.
