HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston scored their lone goal which was also the equalizer with less than three minutes to play in the third period. Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) finally got the puck past former teammate Olivia Petito, after the Beacons were held scoreless for nearly 46 minutes of regulation.
Caitlin Connor got the Panthers on the scoreboard midway through the first period off of an Alie Louie assist. The shot was one of just 10 for the Panthers in the opening stanza. The Beacons offense outshot their conference rivals, as they totaled 14 chances on goal.
The second period was a shootout from start to finish, with neither goaltender giving up a single chance. The Beacons would once again lead the period, this time outshooting the Panthers 21-17. UMass Boston dominated the final period of regulation, but had to settle for the lone goal from Ryan. Ryan's game-tying goal, the first of the season for the Beacons, came off of a cross ice pass from Bri Colucci (Lancaster, N.Y.). Ryan brought the puck through the neutral zone, and immediately went at Petito. She fired off a wrister to beat Petito on the near side.
Moments later, the Beacons nearly scored the game-winner with Cailey Kozich (Wexford, Pa.) ringing the near post. Erica Lunn (Kingston, Mass.) also had a great shot at goal, but was unable to get it past Petito. Just as time expired Addie Budington (Winnetka, Ill.) also had a great shot on goal go wide as the Panthers defense pushed the puck aside to keep the score locked at ones.
The overtime period was the only frame with the Panthers led in total shots. The Beacons struggled to build any momentum in the final period, and nearly lost the game twice, but were saved both times by senior Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.).
The Beacons best chance of the overtime came in the final 30 seconds when they earned a face-off in their offensive end. The Beacons won the draw and nearly ended the game with a slap shot. Unfortunately the Panthers defense managed to deflect the puck wide to keep the score even at 1-1.
