HOW IT HAPPENED
Young's game-winning goal for the Huskies came in the 106th minute of the contest. With the win Southern Maine will host the sixth-seeded Rams of Suffolk University next Saturday, after the Rams upset the third-seeded Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University.
With the loss, the Beacons 2019-20 season comes to an end. Despite having just 14 players in the line-up, the Beacons brought it to the host Huskies from the opening face-off.
Young snuck the puck past Beacons netminder Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) as multiple players crashed the net. The Beacons defense tried to get the puck out of the zone, but were unable make that final clear.
UMass Boston struck first in the contest with Katie Leffler scoring her 12th goal of the season. Kelsey Ryan assisted on the then go-ahead goal, which was scored at the 9:44 mark of the first period. After a scoreless second, Southern Maine scored the equalizer in the opening minutes of the third.
Southern Maine led in total shots in the first and third periods, but in the overtime it was all UMass Boston. The Beacons outshot the Huskies 26-13 over the extra frames.
Flagg ended the marathon contest with 43 saves in her final game as a Beacon. The now reigning NEHC Goalie of the Year, concluded one of the most impressive tenures in the history of UMB women's hockey.
