Women's Basketball Cruises Past Plymouth State 67-48

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior Jamie Staples (Springfield, Mass.) scored 13 of UMass Boston's 34 bench points, to lead the Beacons past visiting Plymouth State University 67-48 Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Staples was honored before the game for reaching 1,000 career points and then put together one of the best games of her Beacons' career. She finished with 13 points on 3-7 shooting and added six rebounds, five assists and no turnovers in 28 minutes.

Junior Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) paced the Beacons with a game-high 16 points. She scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter and ended the day shooting 4-8 from the field, 2-4 from distance and 6-6 from the free throw line. Grassi tacked on seven rebounds (five offensive) and two assists.

Freshman Jade Wint (Brockton, Mass.) added six points and six rebounds and Nicola Webbe (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in two points and three rebounds.

Chenysse Hil led Plymouth State with 11 points and five rebounds. Sarah Sweet chipped in 11 points and Elizabeth McLaughlin recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.

UMass Boston took control from the tip, as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Tahjai Mazyck (Hamden, Conn.) opened the run with a jumper and Jalani Jackson (Brockton, Mass.) followed with a 3-pointer. Alecia Quinones (Stoughton, Mass.) followed with four points of her own, before Wint hit a lefty hook shot and a free throw. Grassi capped off the run at 3:54 with a layup off a feed from Staples.

Plymouth State responded with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 14-6 and UMass Boston went into the second leading 16-8 after Hill hit a buzzer-beating shot for the Panthers 

UMass Boston came out firing again to start the second quarter, as they used a 14-3 run to take their biggest lead of the game (28-9). Five different Beacons scored during the flurry, with Grassi scoring four of the 14 points.

Plymouth State managed to cut the deficit to 12 at the break, as Sweet drained a 3-pointer with under 10 seconds to go in the half.

The Panthers used a 10-4 run late in the second quarter to cut the deficit to single digits (45-37) for the first time since the opening minutes of the second quarter. Staples answered with a 5-0 solo run to give UMass Boston a 52-37 lead after three.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21-58) from the field, 31.6 percent from distance (6-19) and 79.2 percent (19-24) from the free throw line.
  • The Beacons held a 53-30 advantage in rebounds and a 24-14 edge in offensive rebounds.
  • UMass Boston earned their sixth-straight win over the Panthers and 11th in the past 13 meetings. Plymouth State leads the all-time series 48-26.
  • The Beacons earned a 34-18 lead in bench points. Twelve of the 14 Beacons who played in the game scored for UMass Boston.
  • Staples reached 1,000 career points against Western Connecticut State University on January 7. She scored 852 points at Springfield Technical Community College.

WHO'S NEXT

UMass Boston will host Keene State College on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Owls handed the Beacons their first loss of the season on December 7, when Keene State earned a 66-49 win in New Hampshire.
