BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston men's basketball erupted for a program-record 18 made 3-pointers, in an 84-48 rout of visiting Castleton University on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston junior Charles Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) knocked down eight of the Beacons' 18 3-pointers en-route to a career-high 34 points. The junior finished 13-22 from the field and knocked down four 3-pointers in each half. He also added four steals and one assist.
Reigning Little East Conference Player of the Week Dasan Cinelli (Boston, Mass.) added 17 points on 3-7 shooting from distance. He also tacked on seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block.
Michael Boyd (Malden, Mass.) initiated the offense all night long. He recorded 10 assists against just two turnovers and also chipped in three points.
Demauriaye Smith led the visiting Spartans with nine points on 4-10 shooting. Remy Brown and Casey Belade each added eight points and Oluwadare Sowunmi led the team with five rebounds.
UMass Boston came out firing from distance to start the game. Boyd opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Charles Mitchell and Cinelli followed with 3-pointers of their own, to help open up an 11-3 lead less than five minutes in.
After a 13-6 run cut the Beacons' lead to 17-16, Mark Munroe (Quincy, Mass.) hit a layup and Mariano Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) drained back-to-back threes, to help extend the lead back to 10 (28-18).
The Beacons closed the half by hitting four more 3-pointers in a 2:18 span, to help extend their lead to 42-24 at the break.
UMass Boston opened the second half on a 16-2 run to totally put the game out of reach. UMass Boston capped off the run with a Malik Lorquet (Sharon, Mass.) dunk, to earn a 58-26 lead with 14:56 to play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston's 18 3-pointers broke the previous record of 17-set on December 9, 2004 against Salem State University. Freshman Josiah Lossiah (Cherokee, N.C.) hit the 18th and final 3-pointer of the game with 33 seconds remaining.
- The Beacons finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field and 41.9 percent (18-43) from distance.
- With the win, UMass Boston has won 10 or more games in four-straight seasons for the first time in program history. The Beacons are 53-41 over the past four years.
- Mitchell's previous career-high in points was 26 as a freshman against Bridgewater State University (1/8/18). He also hit his previous career-high in 3-pointers in that game against the Bears (7 made 3-pointers).
- The Beacons recorded 22 assists against just five turnovers in the win.
- The Beacons improved to 3-0 all-time against the Spartans.
- Boyd has recorded nine or more assists in three of his past four games. He is averaging 8.75 assists per game during that span.
